Flower Hub

"A Smart Way to Balance the Household Budget"

Homeowners with residential batteries can now help support the electricity grid – and make money at the same time. Since Johan Fagerstedt from Lidingö discovered the technology, he has been “lending” his stored energy to the grid and earned an extra income through the service Flower Hub. “It feels good from both a financial and ethical standpoint,” he says.

In Johan Fagerstedt’s basement, a device as small as a mobile phone has been connected to his home battery. The device is one of the “hubs” from the Flower Hub service, now supporting the electricity system and providing additional income streams for homeowners across Sweden.

“My wife and I have installed solar panels on the roof and have a home battery that stores the household’s energy. Now, we get help to use that energy efficiently, which provides a much-needed extra income each month,” says Johan.

“We expect to recoup our investment within about a year and then start making a profit”

Earned a few thousands

Since August 2024, the service has optimized the couple’s home battery, resulting in thousands in extra earnings (SEK). One advantage of Flower Hub, according to Johan, is the fixed monthly compensation, which means less worry about inconsistent returns.

“We previously used a similar service where we only got paid for the number of kilowatt-hours sold. Now, we get paid even when the battery is in standby mode, and the price is set at a fixed rate each month. Compared to before, Flower Hub has clearly been the most efficient and lucrative solution. We expect to recoup our investment within about a year and then start making a profit,” says Johan.

“Feels good to support the grid”

When Johan heard about Flower Hub, the social benefit aspect was an important driver in his decision to invest. The service uses energy from the household’s battery to stabilize the frequency of the power grid, which ultimately helps reduce electricity prices for consumers and prevents disruptions like power outages.

“You hear a lot about the instability of the power grid, that today’s infrastructure isn’t enough. It feels good to be one of the households helping to strengthen the grid. It’s important given the growing energy demands of the future.”

“It’s convenient that it’s so small and easy to install.”

A passive income source

To get started, Johan hired an installer to activate the service. The small “hub” was connected to the home’s battery system and router, operating independently from that point onward.

“It’s convenient that it’s so small and easy to install. It also feels good to earn returns on the investment without actually having to do anything,” says Johan.
